Women in Leadership
Many women strive to be leaders of communities, cities or even countries, but many people still believe that a woman is unfit to be a leader. This older belief comes from our ancestors and sadly is passed down through generations. Men and women are both equally fit to leaders, however the world perceives strength in a physical way, we need to steer away from this view. Strength can be mental as well.
Hurdles that women need to overcome in order to be more successful in workplaces:
Many women struggle with confidence issues, they tend to accept that they won't be leaders or be paid the same as their male colleagues. Women need to overcome this by believing in themselves and in doing so, gaining confidence to believe that they can achieve their goals.
Women feel uncomfortable talking about their strengths and what they can bring to a workplace. Women need to define what they can bring to the table and do that to the best of their ability. Women are also uncomfortable about asking for something they want, they need to identify what they need and find the confidence to set about achieving their goal.
Women opt out of leadership because after a certain amount of time they find the situation too stressful. Women believe that they have to pick up more and more responsibilities as time goes on, this is a natural instinct for most women. We need to shift the mindset so that women think that they do not have to do it all themselves. It is okay to accept help.
Below is a video that explains the seven different hurdles that women face in the workforce and how they can overcome each one:

Women in Leadership in Australian Companies
Women are highly under represented in large Australian Companies such as Google, Harvey Norman, Telstra, Woolworths and Caltex.
However in Google Australia, the Managing Director is Maile Carnegie. (pictured left) Maile encourages flexible working hours to encourage more women to join the technology industry, in stating that "female participation is a critical issue for the industry." |
Catherine Livingstone works for Telstra, she has made the company billions of dollars. She is the first female president of the Business Council of Australia and promotes science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Livingstone believes strongly in the future of STEM stating, "people who don't have STEM skills will be at a serious disadvantage in the global economy."
These women are highly inspiring to the young people of Australia because they are living examples of what you can achieve when you strive to reach your full potential.
